Council meetings are held on the first Monday of January, March, May, July, September and November in the Constable Room at Osmington Village Hall, Shortlake Lane Osmington. Additional meetings are convened to discuss planning matters as and when they arise. The
meetings begin at 7.00 pm with a 'democratic half hour'. Members of the public are welcome to attend and raise any issues during this period. Beyond 7.30 pm, the Council is in session and members of the public are welcome to remain but are not permitted to contribute other than by invitation. Once
a year during May, the Annual Parish Meeting is held in the main room of the Village Hall. The
Council comprises seven members and the Parish Clerk.
Parish
Councils form part of the English system of local government and have a variety of responsibilities including commenting on local planning applications, managing the playing field, maintaining footpaths etc. The next tier is West Dorset District Council whose responsibilities include refuse collection, planning and building control, public health and collection of Council Tax and Buisness Rates. The top tier is Dorset County Council whose responsibilities include Education, Police and Fire Brigade, Social Services etc.
